Beverly Cleary

It was in the beautiful Outdoor Learning Gardens (OLG) that Portland Earth Art and Agriculture Project began in 2009. All students currently participate in monthly garden lessons, maintaining the six diverse gardens, growing edible annuals and native perennials, many of which are harvested for the cafeteria salad bar.

The gardens at CSS include an extensive native plant garden featuring thimbleberry, wild rose, and spirea- making the garden a native insect paradise come spring. With 8 raised garden beds, a large in-ground garden bed, and a greenhouse, students are able to grow an edible bounty. This fresh produce is regularly shared with the cafeteria to provide the salad bar with garden goodness.

Bridger's extensive native plant garden provides a lush habitat for hummingbirds, woodpeckers, preying manti, bumble bees, and many other creatures, and transforms into a popular nature play space after school.   Bridger's green team recently installed new raised garden beds and a 3-bin compost system to expand our edible gardening,  cooking projects, and produce for the school cafeteria.

Laurelhurst

K-8

The Laurelhurst garden features an outdoor classroom, a perennial raspberry bed, and a butterfly garden.  Strong parent support over the years has seen the building of new beds, the expansion of the butterfly garden, and the inclusion of a water tank.  Students grades k-6 visit the garden for the annual welcome day, a seed saving exploration, winter bird studies, Earth Day, and the end of the year garden party, as well as monthly garden-to-cafeteria lessons.

The diverse cultures at Harrison Park continue to inform our approach to curriculum and the foods grown for students and families.  K-5 classes participate in ongoing garden programming and  we are delighted to be neighbors with the Harrison Park Community Garden where many families grow an abundance of culturally-specific produce.

The Beverly Cleary school gardens offer students an immersive learning experience on two campuses in NE Portland. The Fernwood gardens feature 8 raised beds with season extenders, a colorful tool shed and irrigation.  The Rose City Park gardens are just 3 years old and offer students an agricultural model of in-ground beds and paths established by students.  All students enjoy growing annual edibles to taste in classes and the cafeteria.

School Garden Consulting

School Garden Education

Atkinson
Elementary

We currently teach garden education programs at eleven schools in three school districts- eight in Portland Public, one in David Douglas and two in West Linn-Wilsonville. Through customized collaboration with school administrators, classroom teachers, and parents we work to reflect the unique school cultures, diverse learning needs, and specific gardens at each site.  Students  participate in monthly, seasonally-focused lessons with an emphasis on place-based, experiential learning.  We value diversity, culturally-responsive teaching, and long-term professional relationships.

Lincoln Park

Elementary

Lincoln Park Learning Garden is in its third year of life, and its second year of partnership with EAA. In 2015, with EAA & OGH assistance, we expanded our usable garden space and offered both school day and after-school programming to K-5 students.  With over 23 languages spoken in our small school, the garden is a place to celebrate our differences and to find common ground through caring for this beloved community space.

Grout Elementary

Grout came on board in 2016 with the help of one committed teacher and an excited parent.  The diverse cultures and multiple languages at Grout continue to inspire new initiatives and learning.  With 10 productive raised beds,  a rain garden, enthusiastic and collaborative teachers, and eager students, we continue to thrive and grow at this vibrant school.

Cedaroak Park Elementary

Vestal K-8

Cedaroak joined our team in 2016 and is our first partnership with the West Linn-Wilsonville School District.  Thanks to dedicated parents, principals, and teachers, all students participate in monthly lessons.  We are fortunate to have both an indoor and outdoor classroom,  two incredible gardens, fruit trees and berry bushes, and great connections with the cafeteria.

Originally a parking lot, a partnership between Portland Parks and Recreation and Depave transformed a corner of the Vestal School property into a .36 acre garden in 2009.  About one quarter of that is used for the school garden which includes a classroom space, tool shed, worm bin, and native planting strip.  All students in grades k-3 participate in garden programming, as well as middle school STEM students.

Trillium Creek joined the team in 2017 as our second school in the West-Linn Wilsonville School District.  Starting with K-3rd grade and 20 raised beds, we are excited to see this garden and program grow!
